Daylight robbery.

For a long time the Mars Bar was used as a barometer of inflation. ‘A hours wage would buy 5 Mars bars in my day’ etc. etc. But we may have a new one in these more cosmopolitan times. The Clarendon Park essential, Lavazza coffee. I would never want to be thought of a consumer researcher, but brace yourselves for this bombshell! We, as many know, have a new local Sainsbury’s on Queens Road. This seems a good idea all round as it makes us all less car reliant. Lavazza is about the only thing I rely on supermarkets for. The going rate (Morrison's) for a pack is £2.74. The big Sainsbury’s in Oadby had it on spesh last week at £2.05. A snip. Here on Queens Rd it sell for £3.05. A more than a 10% price hike. Watch out!

£2.99 from Discount Coffee (www.discountcoffee.co.uk). Scandalous.

Thanks Hele.I always (wrongly) assume it's just my mates who read all this to make up for not being in the pub chatting like real people. It's buzzing with bars here these days.

Affer. You off all people should know there's no such thing as a free lunch. 'Discount Coffee' indeed.

Even allowing for the economies of scale this does seem a considerable mark up, as I would have thought Queens Road was the ideal market for this coffee. The question is, is it worth going from Queens Road to Oadby to save 31p.

Absolutely not Accountant, but this could be the tip of the iceburg. I had planned to buy my loo rolls and stuff there as well, but this noticeable price hike will cause me to check out other prices. On a good note I found a three pint (plastic) bottle of milk on the road this morning. It had fallen of the milk float (previous Blog) Undamaged, it's now in my fridge! Result.

Blimey that's expensive. Especially when you drink treble espressos. You'd better come over and stock up.

How much is it there Ron?

My one luxury in these straightened times is Illy. And I always pay through my not inconsiderable nose for it.

Balls - no way!

Seriously, locate your local cosmopolitan outlet - must be plenty in Leicester - and buy yerself a tin of Kurukahveci Mehmet Efendi - a grand and usually cheaper Turkish Lavazza substitute...

Nice to read about Queens Road, not to mention the Mop. Like your other commenters I lived nearby for a while, and grew up a stone's throw from Warwick.

Top grocers and butchers on Queens too.

Best wishes.
